permits to start self employed business

Hubby and I are talking about what we could do for employment should we make the move, probably to STJ and wondered (I searched and didn't come up with this yet) if there are major obstacles to getting permits to start your own business. So, for example, if he wanted to start a boat repair or boat charter business, who or what would prevent him for legally establishing his own business? Would native folks who would consider him competition be able to prevent him from getting a business off the ground? I'm reading so much about government corruption and wondered how pervasive this is on a local level. Thanks!

karrieb,
You and hubby just need a business license. Depending on the time of year this can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months (during carnival, christmas, easter). If you need a ficticous name then that will hold things up a week or two. On the boat repair or boat charter business there should be no obstacles. Hubby can always start repairing boats one at a time while waiting on the license. What sort of repair work does he do?

You can actually apply on line now and have it in a week or so. At least that's what the Commisioner says!

Well now he works on our sailboat, mostly woodwork stuff/ refinish work but does some light engine stuff like tuneups, ripping out and replacing gas tanks, lighter weight stuff more or less. I don't know what he'd want to do in the islands but he sure isn't going down as an engineer! We're just wondering outloud now as we need to scope out our finances, had thought of buying an available piece of land in North Carolina but our dreams of the USVI keep interfering with thoughts of the southern usa states/coastline. We think he'd be better off working for himself as he's quite picky and exacting about his work and very independent. We'll see where our dreams take us over the next couple of years!

Sense I started the process from the states I used a lawer in STT to register my name because you need an EIN to get a business license. I then had a reccomendation from my lawyer to use a consulting agency to apply for the business licese. I just found this to be easier sense I was off island.

Good luck!!!
