SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN!

Skys The Limit,

You say that you "think the most effective of all that is being seen by your family and friends picking up trash every day for a few years in a pink jump suit."

Sheriff Joe's chain gang is VOLUNTEER! If an inmate is ashamed or embarrassed, he or she does not have to do it! What's effective about that?

As far as tents are concerned, you do realize that AZ temps are 20 degrees plus hotter compared to the USVI most of the year? I happen to like my prisoners in nice secure concrete cells with bars on the doors and windows, they last a lot longer and the guard to prisoner ratio is lower.Again, not much effect here.

40 cent meals? Sorry, I'm going to need to see more proof than just an over 2 year old, anonymous, mostly debunked email. There are soup kitchens all over the country that get gov't surplus food and donations of produce and canned goods that can't come close to that number.

Here is what I think we agree on. We both agree that crime in the USVI is getting (or has gotten) way out of hand. I think we agree that a big part of the problem is due to what appears to be lax law enforcement when it comes to friends and family. The courts also seem to play a role in this.

I even admit that Sheriff Joe has a couple of good programs in place. However, when it comes to public officials, I believe in the Joe Friday approach (Just the Facts).

I have copied the next few paragraphs from an article in the Phoenix New Times.

Now on to the figure mentioned in the Dickerson piece of 2,150 "prison condition" lawsuits since 2004. Anyone with two licks of sense can go online at pacer.psc.uscourts.gov, or dockets.justia.com, enter "Arpaio" into the federal court docket, then count the lawsuits that name "prison conditions" as the cause. Count back to 2004, and as of mid-December, that number was more than 2,150.

The same search for the top jail custodians in L.A., New York, Chicago, and Houston nets a total of only 43 "prison condition" lawsuits.

Remember, those 2,150 lawsuits against Arpaio are only in federal court. There are hundreds more listed online with the Maricopa County Superior Court, at superiorcourt.maricopa.gov/docket/civilcourtcases/. end.

You may say that this some kind of witch hunt or the by-product of the "Sheriff Joe Haters" but so far the county has spent nearly $50 million in awards on cases that were lost.

I also think we agree that no one is above the law. Shouldn't that go triple for an elected law enforcement official?

Terry, I saw the same article. Although I agree with you, I wish Mexico would take some responsibility and make their country a decent place to live so people wouldn't feel the need to leave.

Although I'm a fan of Sheriff Joe, I was discussing this with someone at work the other day, and he made a good point... many of the inmates under Joe's "care" are un-tried and unsentenced... meaning that some of them are potentially innocent. Interesting.

In jails all over the country there are people who have yet to be tried. They are a flight risk to be let out awaiting trail.

Oh, I know that! 🙂 I just meant that maybe we should reconsider how they're being treated until we know they're guilty.

More about Saint ah, I mean Sheriff Joe.

http://emptywheel.firedoglake.com/2009/12/09/arpaio-and-thomas-the-most-unethical-sheriff-and-prosecutor-in-america-conspire-to-abuse-power-and-obstruct-justice/

If I lived in AZ or had family there, I'd probably not speak up either.

Remember, It's not a smear site if they are telling the truth!
