Thinking about buying a bar in St. Thomas

My husband and I are thinking about buying a bar on the island. I have read this site from top to bottom and understand the cost of living, but want real people' s opinion of living in paradise. Are there many "local" bar's or do they all cater to the tourist industry?

There are many local bars as well as many tourist bars.

Thanks..................I really want to open a bar to cater to locals and tourists! There is also a possibility of adding slot machines.
Any info on that? Is gaming new to STT?

beerinparadise,

St. John is getting something similar to what you seem to want. Here's the link to the newspaper. The article with photo is about half way down on the left. Good Luck.

Many bars have video gaming. It isn't new. Do you intend to purchase an existing bar or open a new one?

We have found an existing one. We are still doing research, but it sounds like a nice place. Says it is a couple of blocks from the beach, but have not found out exactly which bar it is. We are in the process of discussing it with the listing agent! We are also looking at one in Myrtle Beach, but would really like the one on STT to work out!

The old Miniature Golf Course Bar is only a few blocks from the Coki Beach -- and just up the road is that nice bar with the big parking lot - that has a for sale sign too. Might want to come check these places out in person - in the interest of 'still doing research'.

Thanks for the tip........the place we are looking at is supposed to have excellent wings...several varieties! We really want a pleasant atmosphere, nice people and a fun place to hang out. Of course at the beach, they are probably all like that.

No, they are not all like that! 🙂

Have you been to St Thomas?

Yes, but it has been a while. So the bars are not all happy, fun, beach type bars?
Please elaborate!

I cannot give you an objective description of the bars or St Thomas or "living in paradise", so I am not going to elaborate on that. 🙂

Just take at least two weeks off, come on down, rent a car and see for yourself!

We are coming the middle of August to check out the bar and the island. If it is not paradise, you can not tell it by the pictures. We live where the cost of living is very high now and the "manana" attitude is very prevalent, so based on the blogs, it would not be much different than where we are. The only thing that bothers me is the crime, although again, you have that everywhere.

Oh I think buying a bar in the VI on-line would make a much better story - maybe a book - and easily a screenplay.

I think somebody is already doing the mini golf bar. Maybe this one is Jack's. A miles or two from the beach Many types of wings. Can't think of any others at this moment.

Is Jack's fun? Is it more local or more tourist?

I think most would agree that its a MUCH better idea to live here for a year or so and work in a bar before you try buying one. The success rate is not very good. And the problems you will come across here are not the same. And in doing anything in the island you need good contacts.

Yes, I agree. I think we have decided on the bar in Myrtle Beach. This site helped tremendously.....I appreciate everyone's honesty.
It looks beautiful, but not sure I want to live there based on a lot of comments on this site.
Thanks

Making business decisions based on comments on a discussion board is an interesting technique. Good Luck in Myrtle Beach!

The only decision that was made was to not spend time or money checking out STT based on so much negativity from people that are already there. The decison on which bar to buy is a calculated decision based on many variables. We just decided that STT was not a place we were interested in doing business........and thanks to sites like this we made that decision fairly quickly!
