I was reading about the Poor Dog who was killed apparently by a frog. My condolences by the way, hurts to lose a good dog. My question is what other viruses, diseases do we need to worry about? Are there vaccines we need before we come? My dog is my fishing/drinking buddy most definitely my best friend and I would be crushed if I let something preventable happen to her. Thanks in advance.

all his normal vaccinations need to be current before you can fly with him. You need a vet certification within 10 days of your flight. You don't need other special vaccinations for your dog here, but be sure he is on heartworm medication and tick medication since those are both very common problems here for dogs.

Ditto Alexandra. Tick fever can be a big problem for dogs. And without heartworm meds it's very likely they'll get it & die from it. It's also expensive to try to cure them of it.

Oh, I think you'll need a certificate from your vet that your dog has gotten its rabies shots for the airline's sake. We don't have rabies here, fortunately. If we take our dogs to the States they also need the certificate but my island dogs have never had the shots since they don't travel.

Hi Greg, I know this post is a couple weeks old, but in case you haven't moved yet, I thought I'd add this... I just moved to St Thomas this fall with my dog, and one thing I was told about was a fairly serious parvo virus problem throughout most of the islands around here. So I would recommend making sure your dog's parvo shot is recent, and if not, get a booster before coming down.
Happy holidays.
