I just checked out the website for Villa Fairview Hotel. It clearly mentions at the bottom of the page that its a 10 min. walk to town but not advisable to walk at night. I assume that means its in a bad neighborhood...please correct me if I am wrong!

Also, as I begin my apartment search, can anyone recommend areas to stay away from? We haven't decided on an area yet, we are waiting to see where our employers are located.

thanks,

ZD

It's my place, what should I write? I wrote that so you know that at night the steet urchins come out. This is true for the whole island of St. Thomas basicly.

I stayed at the villa and know many people who also did....we walked down to town every day, was fine. No problems at all....I always made sure I was not by myself as a girl. Its perfect when you dont have a car and work in town. Its not even 10 minutes walk, maybe 5 minutes, depends on your speed 🙂
And yes I agree with Ronnie, anywhere at night would be the same if you are out on the streets alone...

zdphotos: You will be in excellent hands with Ronnie at Villa Fairview. To put everything into perspective, there is pretty much no area of STT which would be safe to walk late at night. There are very limited pedestrian walkways. period. The terrain is primarily volcanic/mountainous. If you stay at Villa Fairview which is "in town" or anywhere else, you are advised, if you don't have a vehicle, to take a taxi after dark.

To make my point, this has actually less to do with potential street muggers (although I don't deny that we have them and they can spot a "mark" in a heartbeat) but more to do with the practicality as noted. Cheers!
