Homicide Rates

Quebec
Population 7.9 million
Homicides 84
That's 1.06 homicides per 100,000 persons

Canada 2010
Population 34,482,000
Homicides 554
That's 1.62 per 100,000 persons

USVI 2010
Population 110,000
Homicides 66
That is 60 per 100,000

I searched for conviction rates and did not have much luck in Canada.
The obvious difference is people here co-operate with police to help them find the killers.

Perfectly safe. No problem.

And don't forget, in the USVI only law-abiding citizens have trouble owning and carrying firearms.

We have Plenty of Guns here in Canada.
Yes getting a permit to carry one is very difficult.
Owning rifles and handguns not a problem.

Guns don't kill people the people using the guns do.

Many Many guns and alot more population in Canada,
Not that many murders so its simple to see its not the guns its a people problem.

The hospital here, especially the ER is a joke. We need sanitary conditions, competent and compassion staff. A sense of urgency would be nice as well. I don't need to discuss WAPA.

I remember the power going out just about every day when visiting STT throughout the 70s. In the 80s it went out two or three times a week when I was living on STT. How is it now?

NoOne, I am on STX, and depending on where you live WAPA goes out frequently. Most in the grids that are surrounded by the bush. We live mid island south shore, and the service here isn't as bad as when we lived on the west end.

Depends where you are on STT but, compared to the outages in the 80s, they seem a little less frequent and definitely of shorter duration.

Well...there is about 50,000 of us on STX, and we go about our daily lives without being hit by a bullet.

My mom lived here for 95 years and never got hit by any kind of bullet and she had friends and family in all of the projects.

That ain't the reason you leave.

I love STX.

Reliable power in the US because of coal-burning power plants, and nuclear power plants. That chicken coming home to roost one day.

Home Despot...

2 people shot in the head at 11:30am in the parking lot next to where I worked.

One busboy shot another at the resort where my husband worked.

Two cops shot at "Eat" at Cane Bay....

My husband saw a drive by shooting at a local grocery store.

Don't sugar coat it.

Do you still post on this board because you're so angry at the VI?

Wow. Shooting the messenger only serves to condemn the message. Different people have different prospective. I think you can love the VI and hate (be angry at) the violence. The two emotions aren't mutually exclusive. Susan makes a strong point. Hushing-up the facts doesn't solve anything. People speaking up and gathering together is the only way to invoke positive change. (i.e. peace officer status).

Home Deapot, I wonder how many of your grandma's friends lost sons, brothers or husbands to violence. Gun play isn't just confined to "the projects". Victims of violent crime come from all walks of life. Seems that the odds are higher if you are male between the ages of 18 and 50.

Anyone who hasn't been negatively effective by violence either doesn't have any interaction with friends, neighbors, co-workers or is a liar. There are many shootings which aren't reported in the daily snooze. Be safe. Be aware. Be kind to one another. Together we can effect change for our territory.

Wherever Susan goes, facts will be hushed up.

She could escape de VI only to get killed by a drunk driver or run over by a bus.
Everybody dies of something. Don't live your life being scared. If a stray bullet don't get you, something else will. You die how you're supposed to die. You could run away to Virginia or someplace and somebody does some gas fracking and opens up a sinkhole under your house and you disappear. Or the methamphetamine lab next door in your nice neighborhood can explode and burn down two dozen houses including yours. Life is dangerous.

Thanks blu4u...

I loved the VI, but I am not willing to risk my life for a $10/hour job. I was told that if someone stole a loaf of bread from our store I should run after them. No way....

STX was beautiful, but it is so nice to run my AC in Florida for $80/month. I can flush the toilet every time I use it. No longer have to take military showers in cold water. Can dry my clothes in the dryer, and can shop somewhere other than kmart!

Food is fresher and alot cheaper!

Home Despot.....I don't live my life being scared. I have lived in a bad area of Brooklyn, NY, and did fine. I don't want to pay 40% more to live on an Island and have to worry that the restaurant I am eating in could be robbed at gunpoint.....and have 2 cops get shot !

Forgive my confusion but it just won't go away.

Nine months ago you posted about making plans to return to the mainland. Those plans were predicated on missing family, you were "sad to say" you were planning on moving and you made a point of saying that were it not for Hovensa closing you would probably stay for another year. In previous posts you'd given no indication that you were at all unhappy with life on STX.

On June 30, 2012, just five months ago, a poster thinking of moving here started a thread about STX entitled, "Needing to know about the crime" and on that date you said, "Have been living in STX for a year ... no probs, yet!"

Barely more than one month later, on August 10, 2012, you did a complete turnaround and wrote, "Lived in STX for 2 years. The cost of living is way more than you are used to. Crime is rampant...even if it is just among the Crucians, you just don't want to be in the way of a stray bullet! Life there is not all beautiful beaches and sunsets. Glad to be back in the US!" Since then you've not only repeated that negative over and over but have also railed against dirt, dust, cost of living, toilet flushing and even expressed how much you hated saying, "Good Morning/Evening/Night" to people.

What on earth happened between July 1 and August 9 that your opinion changed so drastically? My curiosity has nothing to do with the fact that you have an opinion. I get it that for several reasons you didn't like living here but what doesn't make any sense at all is that your opinion did such a complete turnaround from one month to the next.

Old Tart......maybe being back on the mainland made me appreciate how much better life is here!

I am surprised that you have so little to do than to look up my old posts!
