Old Tart......maybe being back on the mainland made me appreciate how much better life is here!

I am surprised that you have so little to do than to look up my old posts!

Well thank you for the explanation. So therefore one should accept that while you were living here you weren't bothered much by crime, dirt, flushing (or not) toilets, customary pleasantries, etc. but as soon as you set foot on the mainland your whole perspective radically changed. It doesn't make much sense but thank you for the explanation.

As far as the little comment about having time to go back on posts, you may not realize that it takes only a few seconds to confirm what one remembers of a posting by going to the source. Of course if one doesn't know how to use the tools at one's disposal then it's bound to to take more time but, as much of a technological dummy as I am, there are some things I've not had a problem figuring out ...

Old Tart....

I do know how to look up old posts.

I did not complain about STX when I lived there because I didn't want to insult all of those who love it.

I'll be down in Feb...Let's get together!

Well, we could insult you guys by saying that Floridians like to eat roaches....:D

Looks like the criminals are pretty busy too http://www.floridatoday.com/section/CRIME

It's all in fun. 🙂

Amazing what people do for fun (or to win a snake). My felines occasionally catch roaches just for the heck of it but none has ever eaten one so maybe that makes them smart? 😀

"A" cockroach? He ate "dozens" according to the linked article - and they were "giant" cockroaches, too.

Given the preponderance of crazies and other assorted nut cases in Florida and the rest of the States, I'll take my chances with the occassional stray bullets flying around here. I have a huge cistern, flush my toilet each time I use it, live in my own house, have a solar water heater, and the tradewinds keep my house cool...never needed AC.

We would have cheap WAPA too if we had one of those wonderful coal-fired power plants

http://www.catf.us/resources/factsheets/files/Children_at_Risk-Florida.pdf

or maybe a perfectly safe nuke plant, sitting on all that flat ground next to the ocean just waiting for a big hurricane or tsunami.

To each his own

To all future Susan56 types:

The USVI, STX in particular, is an in-your-face, for real place.

If we don't like you, we won't smile at you with a fake smile.
We don't like service sector jobs...we'll do them for the money, but we won't smile...we might suck our teeth...nothing personal.
If you get into any kind of business deal with us, legal or otherwise, keep your end of the bargain or we'll be pissed.
If you come here, we will not spoil you...you need to be able to deal.
If you can't deal, don't expect to live comfortable on ten dollars an hour jobs and bartender jobs.
If you don't like having a lot of Black people around, or you don't like to mix with Black people, don't come here.
If you like everything perfect, like roads for example, don't come here.
If you are not healthy, don't come here. Our hospital has issues but we locals can deal.
If you are White and only like to live around people who look like you, you better be rich. East End is expensive.
If you think that every time somebody gets killed you are next, don't come here.
If you kill somebody, their family will probably retaliate by trying to kill you...don't kill anybody.
If you think your politicians are better than ours, don't come here. We love Chucky Hansen...but we love Judy Fricks too (she's one of us).
Do not disrespect the Black people here with your stateside racism...they will retaliate by making your life miserable.
If you want everything like where you are from, stay there..we don't like Walmart, Taco Bell, and all them junk food places that make you need good hospitals.
The beaches are beautiful, but Black people use them too. We don't like anybody telling us we can't use our beaches.
We are accustomed to paying high price for everything...we will say chuuups and continue to deal.
Black people do not have the freedom to run anywhere on the planet and be liked or accepted. This is our home. We like it here.
If you can't live like a local, don't come here.

Love white people...hate racism.

Would you say that White people in general are big fans of Black people? Works both ways.

When you leave a majority Black place because of "fear of stray bullets" and then go to Florida where a Black young man just got shot and killed in his car and the killer is invoking "Stand your ground", well....

BTW, "stand your ground" killings don't get counted in the statistics.

Explain where I sound racist.

I said locals deal with our hospital facilities...yes, that means we go to PR or the mainland if necessary. That's why we have MASA...we deal with the situation.
Nobody said East End didn't have Black people. East End is considered comfortable. You can't expect to come here, make ten dollars an hour, and live in East End-like facilities.

Trying to pretend that people don't see skin color is ridiculous. Doesn't mean someone is racist. As a Black person I always assume that I will be disliked because of my color, until proven wrong. Not just by White people, but also anyone who thinks that being dark-skinned is undesirable...including light-skinned Black people.

The first thing people see is your color.

That's fair. fwiw, I'm white and don't like being around just white people. lol.

I get what you're saying. I was working out east during the election and had to hear a ton of racist BS, that I have no problem calling people out on. I hate that crap too. I come from a very gay area and have gay family members, so I don't care for homophobic BS either. I had a friend with 2 mentally handicapped kids get me to stop using the word retarded.

Also, liking Chucky doesn't mean you love your island anymore than anybody else. It means you don't understand politics and you're hurting the place you love. IMO.

I'm very colored. I have a lot of tattoos. 😀

I was doing a little bit of volunteer work at the AWC (which I really need to get back to) and walking dogs. Well, I went in one day, everybody kind of ignored me, but it was people I didn't really know working, went to the back, grabbed a dog, picked him up and walked out front and sat in the grass with him until he relaxed and opened up a bit. Well, I had no idea, but the front desk girl had been freaking out thinking I was stealing a dog and was about to call the cops. She just saw the tattoos and didn't see me sign in or anything. haha.

I tend to forget about the tattoos and how people can look on them. I forget skin color too. I come from a white area. I was in Plaza one day and it was packed. PACKED. I didn't realize until check out that I was the only white guy in there.

Point well taken. I voted for all of the female candidates. But we do love Chucky, since she was the top vote getter...:D

It's funny, because I really do forget about the tattoos and I come from such an incredibly diverse place, that I do forget about things like color and sexuality. I use to be very good friends with a black woman who fathered a daughter, while being a member of an outlaw biker gang. I'm talking full throttle diversity here. lol

I think Chucky holds this island back and is very good at playing the game of politics. She is open to the poor and listens, but then takes from them all that she can through manipulation of the system without helping to move anything forward. There are some serious problems here, like crime and gun violence. I've also met more people who can not read in the last year, than I have my entire life and I lived in Vegas for a while (bottom school districts).

As far as the term "customer" in the thread title is concerned, I try to think more in "resident" ways. We could make this place so much more beautiful than what it is. The garbage everywhere, the dogs in the road or starving horses tied randomly, being held hostage by WAPA. Customers will come and spend money and bring more customers back with them. Mostly while being respectful of us. We should be focused on making our own daily lives better and the rest will take care of itself.

I didn't realize until check out that I was the only white guy in there.

You do get a bit of a jolt the first time something like that happens to you. It was many years ago when I was talking to someone about someone else who they didn't know. I can't even remember what the context was but the person I was chatting with casually asked whether the person I was talking about was black or white. I was quite befuddled because it suddenly hit me that I couldn't for the life of me bring that fact to the front of my brain and onto my tongue. I got it after what seemed like an interminable time (but which was probably really only a couple of seconds) but it was pretty funny in retrospect.

Happens in other ways too...once when I was working at HESS a coworker I was having lunch with launched into a vicious diatribe about "aliens"...not from another planet, but from "down-island".
When he was finished, he looked at me and goes "you're a Crucian, right?" 😀

I said "No, I'm from Antigua"...if he could have turned red he would have LOL 😀

Do not disrespect the Black people here with your stateside racism...they will retaliate by making your life miserable-should you not have said do not direspect PEOPLE-you brought up race here. respect people ALL of them

The beaches are beautiful, but Black people use them too. We don't like anybody telling us we can't use our beaches.- all people use them and i have never seen any one try to block or stop someone from using the beaches of ANY color.

those are your statements that i found racist.
