It was probably built thinking it would make the connection between the two roads and keep it passable during rainy periods when the area in these parts seriously flood. During all the rainy periods during my two years on island, I never once saw the intersection impassable, so the seriousness of the "cement bridge" makes absolutely no sense. Any local know why it was originally constructed. And perhaps why it was never connected to the roads it would serve? Seems a bit high up to get across it, so the approach ramps would be serious for both ends.

It was first phase for a new overpss going in. Gov. Schnieder could not get federal funding to fix the flood problem without building the bridge. The road is to be totally redesigned to meet the bridge. The gas station on the corner will be eliminated.

The Humane Society shelter property was also acquired by eminent domain as part of the project and thus the huge drive to start the new Animal Care Campus off Weymouth Rhymer Highway. Ground-breaking on this should start later on this year. Until then our lovely Bridge To Nowhere sits there in all its glory!
