Questions about moving to USVI

Hi there,

I am sure there are a lot of the same questions floating around about moving to the USVI and I have done some extensive research on this and other sites regarding crime. What I was hoping to know is which island has less crime: stt or stc? I have been reading about break-ins, alarms, robberies, gun issues ect. I am well aware that many of these crimes happen in our backyards stateside, but my spouse travels frequently and I could spend evenings alone (which I am fine with). I obviously do not want my safety to be extremely compromised.

Additionally, when we look at locations to live on both islands (next week) can anyone give us pointers on areas that have lower crime so we can check them out? We are willing to pay extra to find a safe little piece of paradise to rent. We would be open to buying anyone a drink over there if they are willing to meet up and chat about life on the USVI.

I would appreciate any feedback! Thanks so much

Rosalie - STT and STX have a very similar crime rate. Some areas are identified as higher crime zones, yet crime can occur anywhere now and then. Some new arrivals opt to live in a gated neighborhood when they first move to an island to give themselves time to become familiar with the areas where they are comfortable and where they want to stay away from.

If you come to St. Croix, I'd be happy to connect with you and talk about the island and the relocation process. I am a Realtor, but I also am a real life person who lives here and my meeting and talking to you is NOT conditional upon us doing any business together in the future! I've been on St. Croix for over 5 years now and work with people constantly who are relocating, so often can answer a lot of questions people have at your stage of the process. I hope you have a great trip and find at least one of the islands to your liking. 🙂

I have lived on St. Thomas since 2000 and feel safer here than I did in the states although I am appalled at the number of shootings in the recent past. May have to do with the worsening economy - I don't know. I would be happy to discuss living here with you. Are you going to visit soon? You can PM me.

Hi Rosalie,
I have lived in St. Croix now for 4 years. I look at it this way, crime is everywhere you just need to use common sense. If you decide to come to St. Croix let me know, I would be happy to sit down and talk to you about island life.
PM when you are coming.

Crime is the same. STT is smaller, with the same population as STX. And you really feel it when the cruise ships are in. They also have a greater amount of tourism and better job opportunities. I could never live there. I do not like crowds or feeling like I'm living on top of people. I lived in CA too long for that.

There is no one "good section" of the islands. There are some areas that are better then others for crime but its pretty obvious when you drive around. Just like stateside you can tell a good one from a bad. The hard part is sometimes its a street by street thing. Its a little easier on STX because its a bigger island. On stx for example if you're living close to a project and many nice condos are, you might have a problem, then again you might not.

I would suggest if your spouse travels often you live in a duplexs, apartment attached to a house or a condo. And get to know your neighbors. My husband has to travel as well, but I have renters and dogs and that makes me feel safer.

people are always bringing this questions just be aware like any city in the US and if you don"t participate or hang with people that into drug and crime you wont be a victim of violent crime in regard to petty crimes just be aware of your surroundings do not go to certain areas of town at night and you will be fine. I myself go out every weekend to bars hotels and restaurants until late AM never had any problems going or driving back to my house i do see allot more police at night and that is good

In STT,if you live in some subdivisions like Northstar Village, some of those lots can get really small!
There are some other strange lots I remember on the north side that were only.16 acre!
Though, even some of those weren`t terrible either.(some were).

Most lots here are R-1 (I think, could be wrong) & that`s a 1/2 acre lot(or more).
Even the R-2 lots aren`t so bad with 1/4 acre lots(depends on the hoses & terrain).
If you move into the city of anywhere, you`ll be ontop of someone.
I`m not gonna get into a pissing match of STT vs. STX, but I live on STT & prefer it here!

If your neighbors aren`t crooks, then it might be better to have folks looking after one another!
Here in the USVI,I`ve been robbed by more people with a pen then a gun or knife(I`d prefer to be robbed by the gun/knife myself, at least I know right away what I`m dealing with).
