Shooting by costuless- STT
Thursday someone opened up on a random car with an AK47 in front of costuless STT. A mother was the only occupant of the car and had just dropped her kids off- she wasn't hurt.
Why hasn't this been all over the news? Anyone have any more details?
On the news here:

It was not a random shooting - it was a targeted attack - the woman's car was not the intended target but was struck by a bullet.
Certainly gunfire has gotten way out of control here and is a daily occurrence and a huge concern.
"All over the news"? The crime and guns issue has been a hot topic on the radio call in shows. It all depends on where you get your "news" from. Most of our so called news outlets are just press release distributors with advertising.
It was in the Daily News and the Source and likely on the the radio and local TV news too. Do you need island-wide loudspeaker systems or apps on your mobile?
No. Let's continue to sweep it under the rug as not to scare people away.
How do you sweep it under the rug when it's in the newspapers and being commented upon on the radio talk shows?
It's appalling and all the law enforcement agencies need to find out who is selling these guns, seriously implement ways to stop gang violence and courts need to provide harsher sentences.
The community needs to help by actively helping law enforcement.
People know who these thugs are.
We need to be able to live and conduct our daily lives in safety.
How can something that was reported in so many outlets be considered as swept under the carpet? The Internet exposes almost everything.
Some people think law enforcers know who's selling the guns, yet do nothing about it. There are no simple solutions.

I think that your sarcasm was missed by a few posters on here. 😉

None of that is going to happen in the VI. The only answer is Open Carry.

I meant this specific incident, not crime in general.

I didn't see these, thanks for the source article.
Regardless, not a single person I have spoken to knew about what happened- rather unusual.
My favorite part of the source article:
"sometime later, according to sources, while police were still on the scene, the man who fled the white Honda and ran into the bush pulled up near where the incident occurred in a white Toyota Corolla without license plates. He went into the bush, retrieved a weapon, and jumped back into the Corolla which then sped away."
LOLWUT?
Did you hear about all the shootings weekend of Jan 31 to Feb 1 where people were injured and one died? I thought the frequency of incidents, including the Thursday shooting, is what prompted the calls to talk shows.
I was off island- maybe thats why.
Also, my mind tends to be more spooked by someone opening fire with an AK47 and almost killing kids at 5pm at an intersection I pass 6x a day than it does by what happens downtown at 4am.
As bad as the incident was there was no 'almost killing kids' about it -- the children were not in the car and miles away from the shooting - it only serves to add to the rumor circuit when you embellish a story with a comment like 'what would have happened if ......'

yep, been quite a few shootings lately-even some more murders. looks like they are trying to make up for last months low numbers
Oh please, leave us not regress to fantasy zone. The whole problem here is that so many oif the most vocal critics of law enforcement here on this forum (and I don't believe Alana33 was referring to security guards but to VIPD) hear or see a news piece but NEVER pay attention to any follow-up of arrests and convictions which often take months and years to effect. It isn't "Law and Order" primetime TV where a 60 minute time slot crushes a months-long investigation into a time capsule of a day or two ...
Believe it or not, the "fed dem" have really upped their game the last couple years in regards to making seizures of guns and ammo coming into the territory. There is a LOT that happens that doesnt make the papers.....
Despite the local government always blaming the "Feds" to distract from their incompetence.
Everybody needs to be concerned about shootings on the island no matter where they occur. Many times they are looking for the targets and take the opportunity to shoot wherever they see them. Crime is very mobile and is not confined to certain neighborhoods. Not just here, but Stateside has more resources to provide protection in certain neighborhoods with private supplement.
Did something happen at Lindquist while I was gone? Armed guard there at the entry on a tuesday. And two other guys watching over as well. Maybe until the booth is open? Makes sense to have them there but I've never seen them there before.
As Magens Bay Authority continues to exert its management policies many changes are obvious - the armed guards at Magens beach have been there for years and Smith Bay Park will have many of the same rules too, already the parking is now restricted to a lot a long walk a few hundred yards away from the sand, bathrooms are being constructed, lifeguards are whistling at anyone swimming near the buoys or attempting to snorkel on the actual reefs, and cruise ship passengers are brought in the big safaris including one tour that brings lounge chairs, no dogs, no glass, no smoking and more to come I am sure.
Luckily the Northern end of the beach is private property and not under their auspices and still enjoyable but I wonder how long it will be until there is a fenced area separating it off and accessible only by their private road.
It is a long stretch from what was once a pristine beach but times change.
