I had heard that the SUBWAY in Golden Rock had been bought and new owner Collin Hodge (of Massive Productions and A Taste of St. Croix fame) had made some much needed improvements. I hadn't eaten at Subway on STX for years since it had become much like the golden arches...bad service, extremely long wait times, we all know the rest.

I began frequentling the SUBWAY again a few times a week about a month ago and it seemed fine until yesterday.

Imagine ordering a Cold Cut Trio and finding that they have no tomatoes, no cucumbers, no this and no that, except lettuce, peppers, onions and mushrooms.

When I asked for the mushrooms, I was told by the server that "mushrooms are $1.00 extra".

When I protested, the server said that was thier policy...mushrooms (likely the cheapest veg they offer) are extra.

I pointed out that there was nothing on thier menu board suggesting "mushrooms are extra" but she would not relent.

I continued to question this "policy" but she couldnt care less at this point and just sucked her teeth and looked away.

I took my boring SUBWAY sandwich and just walked away in disgust.

Sorry Collin...I gave it a try but your staff blew it....again.

I should have known better.

I have to completely disagree.
I went there a couple of weeks ago and was very pleasantly surprised.
The inside was very nice and clean.
Service was pleasant and quick andthe sandwiches were great!
Much nicer then the subway over by west kmart.

If you do a quick google, you'll see subway doesn't even offer mushrooms. The fact that they were in your local subway sounds like what little effort the manager or owner could do to get fresh produce in the store to supplement their already depleted supply. Possibly to help enhance the selections of a regular day but today thats all they had. Having been a restaurant manager, I can almost feel their pain. Having never had to deal with getting produce/stock into a restaurant on an island - that i cant imagine.

My advice to you is to assume that subway was having one of the worst days in history and cut them some slack. I don't know how often you go to your subway and find that they are out of ingredients but i can tell you for sure, somebody was having a worse day than you. (being out of the products, frantically trying to locate more and having to deal with non-understanding customers/employees all while running the shop) I don't know, I'm just saying, take into account more than what you see in front of you and maybe understand that somethings are just out of our control.

As far as the worker is concerned, shes just doing her job while having to deal with something thats, more than likely, not her fault all while just trying to make a lowsy buck. Just imagine yourself in her shoes for a second and think about having to make hoagies all day while lacking supplies for hungry, disgruntled customers. Then you come in and agrue a policey that isnt something SHE put on paper but a policy passed down by someone that signs her checks. Now me, yea... sure... Im outta basically everything but mushrooms, you can have some mushrooms. Not everyone get paid to think. Shes probably been threatened with her job before on the account of not charging for mushrooms! Ive fired people for less:S

Don't be so hard on the people. Its not always their fault. Even if it is, calm down, you live in paradise. 😎

**I know Im brand new to this forum but I always have to step in to defend my fellow "In the Biz" workers.**

Much Love and Respect

i too have been in the "business" subways down here do not offer the variety of ingredients that statesiders do. so if you as a restaurant owner knows they are out of a supply, go buy it at cost u less or some other store.
tropicaldenzien, not sure if you live here or not, but teeth sucking and attitude is common here.
i have not been to a subway for a while so have no comment on product or service at those locations, but i know the service is less than stellar.

Just out of curiosity, assuming regular items are in stock, how does a Subway sub here compare to one in the states? For instance, I find that McD's is pretty much the same, but Wendy's seems to look and taste different to me. Having never stopped at a Subway here, are the bread, fillings the same as the stateside Subways?

I was there a week ago and they were out of buns. Literally. Only flatbreads and wraps. How .... errr.

As I had suggested, the Subway had improved greatly and I was delighted to support them again. But really, a $1.00 extra...for mushrooms? Also, could the manager not have ran up the road to Pueblo and bought some vegetables?

Anyway...just had to vent.

That must have been the same day I was there - no buns. I had my double cheese/double steak on flat bread. Not bad. Used to order it in bun but now switching to flatbread.
I have learned to lower my expectations so I now get pleasantly surprised every now and then.

I remember the first time I went to Wendys on STX after we moved there.... they were out of ketchup.
I thought.... "but isn't CostULess right up the street?"

You mean you haven't been to KFC yet when they "got no chicken"?! I can laugh about it now, but I was pretty ticked at the time. Why would a chicken restaurant bother opening if they don't have chicken?

Quality is right up the street and make fantastic sandwiches that are cheaper. I'd just go there.

Definitely love Quality Foods...but used to love Subway too.

The fast food outlest on STX make it soooo easy to eat healthy alternatives.

My friend & I have been going to the Nisky Center Subway(Stt) and have had no problems. But we get there right when they start serving lunch. There you can tell them not to cut the tomatoes in half with no extra charge. A perk!
Also, never had a problem with the Subway at the mall.

Who owns the Subway's on Stt??

KFC. Now that's a different story. They run out of chicken!!! LOL & you have to wait 20 mins. or more for your order, if you want. They also run out of sides at different times. It happens at both KFCs.

Both Subway & KFC has slow & I mean slow service. Sometimes the people in line are patient, but most of the time the cursing & swearing starts happening.

You guys tickle me. With all the great options you choose fast food and complain. I know you have some nice places on STX that you can probably get great sandwiches.
The trouble with most all of the franchises here is they are stuck getting their supplies from the franchise warehouses in Puerto Rico. I have been told by one successful franchisee that he refuses to get his supplies from PR as they send what they want to the VIs last, and it's not how he runs a business, so he circumvents the PR outlets and gets his from Florida. He even offers the same items you see on TV commercials as they offer them. Another thing PR does not supply. Been happening for years.

Never had a problem at Subway in Tutu Park Mall either - very nice ladies and they've never run out of anything. A long wait sometimes but I'm always armed with both newspapers anyway when I go shopping as getting in and out of anywhere is never fast!

Had to laugh about KFC. I've never been in one before on STT (imagine all those years!) but a couple of weeks ago had a hankering for some fried chicken so thought I'd give it a go and went into the one by Tutu. I should have reckoned there might be a problem when I was the only person in there and the girls were standing around over a mound of fried chicken looking painfully bored. No coleslaw. 4PM and no slaw? No diet soda. When i got home and opened up the box the sight was very depressing. The chicken looked as though it'd been cooked days ago and tasted even worse, drier than dry. I barely got two bites out of it, ate the potatoes and made myself a couple of eggs instead.

Stripping the meager amount of meat off the bones I offered it to the neighborhood dog who spends a lot of time hanging out with me and the cats. He's a well-fed big old black lab but seriously eats ANYTHING. I set it in front of him, he sniffed it and then looked up at me with such a pained expression of, "You're KIDDING me!" that I burst out laughing, dumped the "treat" and gave him instead one of the big dog biscuits I keep on hand for him.

OT, now that is a funny KFC chicken story.

That's why I like going to Lake's instead.

KFC is always a last minute choice when a friend wants some.

I like the Chester Chicken. They have it around the island, most times I get it at the Total Bonjour formally Esso On the Run.

BTW, hysterical Tart.
