Wow...what a great account trainwreck82!!! Sadly, none of that was hard to believe. Its amazing that OMax keeps the VI stores open. I'm sure its much the same at the STX store and I've heard similar tales about Home Depot.

It is probably why you see so many new faces (employee-wise) in these stores when you shop.
The turnover seems high to me when I go to Home Depot and Office Max, especially.

How come Office Max and Home Depot never call the cops on these thieves?

Because the cops are their friends and family who they're giving free stuff to?

The court process is very long drawn out and very expensive and for many stores it's much less expensive and infinitely more swift to simply fire the employee(s) involved. It's really that simple.

Its amazing that OMax keeps the VI stores open.

They will never close it, the stores in the VI plus the stores in PR make up District 79, which was considered the magical unicorn of OfficeMax at the corporate office. It's the most wildy profitable group of stores they had by a large margin. Despite how utterly dysfunctional these two stores are, there just is no competition. My stateside store in Chicago would routinely do between $7-$14k in a day, the store here routinely landed north of $40k, the store in Hato Rey would often hit $100k. $100k is more in a day than some districts in the states, again, no competition. Keep in mind all of the info I'm giving is from 2007-8, I have no idea how things are now. I imagine these stores weren't messed with after the merger because of their performance, though. AnA would know better than I would.

The turnover seems high to me when I go to Home Depot and Office Max, especially.

In 5 years at OfficeMax in Chicago I termed a grand total of 2 associates. In 3 months on STT I termed 12, I think I set some kind of company record. I had a conversation with someone high up the chain in loss prevention and I joked that of all associate calls to the company tipline me and Alex were probably ranked #1 and #2. He quipped that he thinks I was actually right.

How come Office Max and Home Depot never call the cops on these thieves?

Oh we did, and they were arrested. The judges don't consider most theft to be any worse than jaywalking, they slap them on the wrist and then they go apply at Kmart.

This is also correct for petty theft cases, we wouldn't report it if it wasn't a large sum.
