For the forum contributors in the VI…

If one of us making the leap were to bring over a gift as a "thought" of gratitude, what is something that we could bring that would make your day that you cannot get shipped there or is too much hassle or perishable?

I know you can buy it online, but because most people don't sleep with AC on down there, high thread count sheets are really appreciated, but expensive.

True. However, I have seen some deals at places like Costco/Sams. Great idea.

Fresh Peaches! The ones we have in the markets here never ripen properly, have no wonderful smells nor do they ever taste like the fresh, juicy ones you can get stateside, at 1/2 the price, I might add!

Real chocolate pound cake. Fresh Kentucky Wonder string beans. Magazines. Newspapers.

I really miss reading Sunday newspapers. Online doesn't do Sunday editions justice.

Fresh oysters and clams at stateside prices.
Notice how we tend to gravitate to food items!

I miss browsing real bookstores!

I would love to get my hands on Turnip Greens, not Collard greens! Also, peas, like Purple Hull, Whopperwill, Crowder and Lady Peas. I would also love to have one of those deers I left in my freezer that I gave to my daughter when I moved back here. Those are the things I really miss.
My daughter was sending me Tom's of Maine Flouride-free toothpaste, but, I found that Mt. Welcome Pharmacy carries it.

I agree with books. I know, I can read them on my iPad, etc. but there is something about holding a real book.

Almost any kind of fresh food. We bring back fresh fish, vegetables, fruit, cheese etc. Oh, how could I forget....croissants and breads.

I second Taco Bell and definitely fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses. I hate thinking about all of my frozen or refrigerated foods coming from somewhere and being above safe temperatures. Thawing and refreezing and thawing and refreezing. Yuck. It freaks me out.

If you can't get a hot out of the fryer Krispy Kreme, they're not that big a deal, imo.

Never understood the appeal of Taco Bell. Tacos are so easy to make and taste much better than Taco Bell. The burritos are a joke. The food never satisfies me. What am I missing? I prefer my own "Mexican."

Taco Bell is a bit embarrassing. I grew up in England and when they opened a Taco Bell on base it was a huge deal. For me it is just a late night, drunk food. When I went back stateside a few months ago for the first time since living here all the junky, fast food places lost their appeal. I barely drank my Starbucks! Everything wasn't so delicious unless it was homemade. Next time I will treat myself to a fancy steak. So..change Taco Bell to Smith and Wollensky or somewhere similar. 🙂

Foodstuffs travel across oceans as easily as they travel interstate in refrigerated or frozen containers which stay that way from point of origin to destination. The technology has come a long way since salt packing and ice blocks ...

Ug, Krispy Kream. I've never had one fresh from the fryer like ms411, but I find the ones in the supermarket are disgusting. Dunkin Donuts for me.
